Puffins

28 Jun

So last Thursday (25th June – FACT) I went to Haverfordwest and then on Friday I went to Skomer Island and then on Saturday I went to Stackpole and then on today I went to Newport Wetlands and then home again and between leaving my house and going back to my house I seen 61 different species of birds and that may not sound like a lot to some birdseeners but you have to remember I am better than you so shut up.

Here are some of the species I seen. Mostly on Skomer to be honest:

Pulborough Brooks

6 Jun

Today I done a spending the day at Pulborough Brooks. It was brilliant. Although some people spoke to me. Luckily none of them were female people. Some did have beards.

I seen a load of stuff.

Willow warbler. Or chiffchaff. Who can tell? Only Gilbert White. And I reckon he made most of this stuff up.

Stuff In The Garden

31 Jan

I just seen some seagulls in the garden.

Stuff in the garden.

Stuff in the garden.

Like humans, seagulls get smaller the older they get. I saw a ninety year old seagull once. Everyone else thought it was a pied wagtail because they aren’t ornithbrilliant like me.

Big Garden Birdwatch

26 Jan

Today I done the RSPB’s big garden birdwatch thing. My garden is a lifeless wasteland though so I done it for my mum’s garden. It ain’t big but I seen the following:

1 x pied wagtail

1 x herring gull

2 x blackbird

4 x house sparrow

5 x starling

1 x woodpigeon

Genuine photo of starling.

I thought that this was a bit boring and anyway all birdwatchers are liars. So, in deceitful RSPB style, here is the list I submitted:

half a dozen griffons

1 x massive owl wearing a hat

3 x stock dove

5 x stockier dove

a whole flock of osprey

8 x Bernard Matthew’s Turkey Drummers

77 x non-existent bearded tits

Well, that’s the list I wanted to submit but my mum wouldn’t let me. She said “two wrongs don’t make a right”. and threatened to withhold Dairylea Triangle privileges.

I’d be interested to hear what you seen when you done your big garden birdwatch.

If I were mentally subnormal.

(edit: Not a) White Wagtail

5 Dec

I just been to Gunwharf Quays. I seen a white wagtail.

When I imagine talking to other people I imagine them saying “Paul, who is baldmonkey from off of the world famous birdseening blog; baldmonkeyseenabird,” they say, “Paul, who is baldmonkey from off of the world famous birdseening blog; baldmonkeyseenabird, how do I know how to tell whether I have seen a pied wagtail or is it a white wagtail?”

And I always imagine telling them “A white wagtail looks like this picture of a white wagtail I seen today, whereas a pied wagtail looks like pied wagtail.”

(edit: The Leicester Llama has brought it to my attention that this is not a white wagtail. It is a pied wagtail in winter plumage. Soz about that.)

I also seen other things.

Wagtail

19 Nov

I gone to Comet cos they are closing down. Didn’t buy anything. Just enjoyed myself. Seen some birds in the car park and all. My fave was this pied wagtail. For a second I thought it was white wagtail but then I realised it ain’t because it ain’t a white wagtail it’s a pied wagtail. That’s how I can tell them apart. You can use that tip if you like.

Seen other stuff there too.

Then I gone to Baffin’s Pond and I shouted “BUNDLE!” at some feral pigeons I seen which caused them to do this. It’s a reflex thing with all Columbidae. They can’t help themselves.

Also I seen a evil shoveler get put in duck-prison for safe-quacking. HAHAHAHA! THAT IS ONE OF MY VERY GOOD JOKES. The shoveler did not really get put in duck-prison for safe-quacking. If anything his quacking was very dangerous. AHAHAHAA! ANOTHER AMAZING JOKE OF MINE!

I seen some coot feet.

And I seen other things.

Pied Wagtail

30 Jun

Today I gone to Longleat. It is a safari park run by some bloke with a beard and a big house. I seen a pied wagtail in the carpark. Pied wagtails are a subspecies of white wagtails. I could’ve done “wagtail, white” off the list, but instead I decided to add “wagtail, pied” and cross that off. I’ll reserve “wagtail, white” for the genetically pure white wagtail which is more common in the rest of Europe.

And I seen this little brown job that is probably just a sparrow but it don’t look quite right for a sparrow to me but I can’t make out what it is so I’m going to say it is a sparrow.

Other than that I seen a few boring things. Like this mallard.

And I seen a dunnock again.

And this greenfinch that had a right attitude. I was all “You want some?” and he was all *flies off* and I was all smug.

Also a ostrich and some sort of bloody awful parrot thing. They ain’t even on the list though cos they ain’t even real birds.
